Pyeloplasty
What Is a Pyeloplasty?
An operation to repair the junction of the ureter and the kidney (Uretero-pelvic junction i.e. UPJ). Narrowing at this tube damages the kidney by affecting drainage.
What Is Robot-Assisted Surgery?
A technique using the daVinci® system robotic console. The surgeon carries out the procedure with more controlled and precise movements. Benefits include reduced blood loss, reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, smaller scars, and faster recovery. It is the standard of care for the management of UPJ obstruction.
What Are The Risks?
Damage to internal structures, port site hernia, shoulder pain, bleeding, or urinary leak. Complications associated with general anesthetic may also occur. A Double J Stent is placed during surgery and removed 4-6 weeks later.
Overall Success Rate
Approximately 90% for radiographic resolution and 95% for symptomatic relief. In comparison, endoscopic techniques have a 70% success rate. Follow-up imaging (nuclear renal scan, CT scan) is obtained to confirm success.
